Indore: Easy win for BJP in Khandwa, hard fought victory in Burhanpur

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in civic elections in Khandwa and Burhanpur municipal bodies - results of which were announced on Sunday. As many as seven candidates were in the fray for the mayoral post in Khandwa.

INDORE: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in civic elections in Khandwa and Burhanpur municipal bodies - results of which were announced on Sunday.
As many as seven candidates were in the fray for the mayoral post in Khandwa. BJP candidate Amrita Yadav - daughter-in-law of former MLA from Khandwa Hukumchand Yadav, maintained a lead of 19765 votes against Congress candidate Asha Mishra.

Yadav won 51,916 votes while her rival Mishra received 32,153 votes, officials said.
The counting started on Sundarbai Gupta School premises at 9.00am, and the final results were declared after eight rounds of counting at 1.30pm.
BJP workers and supporters started celebrations across the city as soon as the results were announced. During the counting, Congress workers allegedly created ruckus, which halted the counting for a while. BJP maintained the lead right from the beginning of the counting, which started with counting of postal ballots.
Out of 50 corporator seats of Khandwa municipal body, a maximum of 29 seats were won by BJP, followed by 12 candidates of Congress winning corporator seats. Nine independent candidates and one from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), said officials with Khandwa district administration.
Similarly, counting of votes for mayoral post in Burhanpur municipal body witnessed a close competition between the BJP and Congress mayoral candidates.

The counting was held at a Mandi Complex at Renuka Mata Road in Burhanpur on Sunday, and There was a neck to neck fight between BJP and Congress in the six rounds of counting.
BJP candidate Madhuri Patel took the lead four times, while Congress candidate Shahnaz Ismile was leading in two rounds.
While BJP candidate Patel received 52823 votes, Congress candidate Shanaz received 52281 votes, with the former winning the mayor post at a marginal difference of 542 votes.
Of the total 48 wards, BJP candidates won from 19 wards and 15 were won by Congress candidates. 13 candidates of independent category and an AIMIM candidate were elected as corporators in the counting, an official spokesman with Burhanpur district administration said.
Polling for Burhanpur municipal council was held on July 6, in which 68.98 percent polling had been recorded.
